Introduction
How to Add Eddyter MCP to ChatGPT (2026 Guide)
Add Eddyter MCP to ChatGPT in Developer mode with one URL and one sign-in. Step-by-step setup, prompts to try, plan limits and fixes for common errors.
TL;DR
Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT settings, create a connector with https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp and OAuth, sign in to Eddyter, then add it to a chat from the + menu.

How to Add Eddyter MCP to ChatGPT (2026 Guide)
Quick answer: In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode. Then click Create, name it Eddyter, paste https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp as the MCP server URL, pick OAuth, and sign in with your Eddyter account. Start a chat, add Eddyter from the + menu, and ask away.
ChatGPT's connector menus have moved more than once this year, so if a label below doesn't match your screen exactly, look for the closest equivalent. The URL and the sign-in flow stay the same.
What Eddyter MCP gives ChatGPT
Eddyter runs a hosted MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. ChatGPT connects to it over HTTPS, so there's nothing to install on your machine and no API key to paste. Once it's linked, ChatGPT gets five tools:
Tool | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Read | License status, plan, expiry date and billing warnings |
| Read | Which editor features are on, off, or locked by your plan |
| Read | AI credits left, usage this period, days until reset |
| Read | Official setup code for React, Next.js, Vite or Remix |
| Write | Turn editor features on or off, live, with no redeploy |
The read tools are the everyday ones. "Am I close to my credit limit?" gets a real answer from your account instead of a guess. The write tool is the one that feels a bit like magic the first time: ask ChatGPT to switch off AI chat, and every user of your editor sees the change right away.
What you need before you start
- An Eddyter account with a license key. Create one at eddyter.com/user/license-key. The free plan works.
- A paid ChatGPT plan. Developer mode is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Free accounts can't add custom connectors.
- ChatGPT on the web. Set it up at chatgpt.com. Desktop and mobile apps are catching up, but the web app is where the Create button reliably lives.
On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may need to allow custom connectors first (Workspace settings → Permissions & roles). If you don't see Developer mode at all, that's usually why.
Step 1: Turn on Developer mode
- Go to chatgpt.com and click your profile name, then Settings.
- Open Apps & Connectors (some accounts show this as Apps or Connectors).
- Scroll to Advanced settings and switch Developer mode on.
ChatGPT will show a warning that custom connectors are unverified. That's standard for every MCP server added this way, not something specific to Eddyter.
Step 2: Create the Eddyter connector
Back on the Apps & Connectors screen, click Create and fill in the form:
- Name:
Eddyter - Description:
Manage my Eddyter rich text editor: license, plan, AI credits, feature toggles and setup code.ChatGPT reads this to decide when to use the connector, so keep it specific. - MCP server URL:
https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp - Authentication:
OAuth
Tick the box confirming you trust the app, then click Create.
Step 3: Sign in to Eddyter
ChatGPT opens Eddyter's sign-in page. Log in, pick the license key you want ChatGPT to manage, and approve access. When you land back in ChatGPT, the connector shows as connected along with its five tools.
The token ChatGPT receives is scoped to that one license key. It only carries tool arguments (like "turn off enableComments"). Your editor content, your users' documents and your ChatGPT history never go to Eddyter.
Step 4: Use Eddyter in a chat
Developer mode connectors are picked per conversation. Start a new chat, click +, choose Developer mode, and select Eddyter. Then ask something only your account can answer:
- "Is my Eddyter license active, and when does it expire?"
- "How many AI credits do I have left this month?"
- "Which editor features are on, and which are locked by my plan?"
- "Give me the Eddyter setup code for a Next.js App Router project."
- "Turn off tables and AI chat in my editor."
On the first try, mention Eddyter by name. ChatGPT sometimes answers from its own knowledge instead of calling a tool, and naming the app nudges it to use the connector.
When you ask for a change, ChatGPT shows a confirmation card with the exact input it's about to send (for example {"toolbarOptions": {"enableAIChat": false}}). Read it before you approve. update_config changes the live editor for everyone on that license key.
ChatGPT vs Claude for Eddyter MCP
Both work with the same server URL. The difference is what each one can do around it.
ChatGPT | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
Setup | Developer mode + Create form | One terminal command |
Plans | Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu | Any Claude plan |
Edits your project files | No | Yes |
Best for | Account checks, feature toggles, grabbing setup code | Installing Eddyter into a real codebase |
If you want the editor dropped into your repo, installed and build-checked in one go, Claude Code does that. For quick checks and toggles from a browser tab, ChatGPT is plenty. We wrote a separate guide on adding Eddyter MCP to Claude Desktop and Claude Code.
Troubleshooting
There's no Create button. Developer mode is off, you're on the Free plan, or your workspace admin hasn't allowed custom connectors.
"Unable to reach server" or the connector won't save. Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp, with https and the /mcp path.
ChatGPT answers but never calls Eddyter. Make sure Eddyter is selected from the + menu in that chat, and name it in your prompt.
A feature change doesn't go through. Either the feature isn't in your Eddyter plan (ask "Which features does my plan allow?"), or your ChatGPT plan restricts write tools. Some individual plans have limited custom connectors to read-only actions at times. A Business workspace or Claude will run update_config.
"No active license key found." Create a key at eddyter.com/user/license-key, then disconnect and reconnect the connector.
The connector drops after a while. Disconnect it in Settings → Apps & Connectors and connect again to refresh the sign-in.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Eddyter MCP with ChatGPT Free?
No. Custom MCP connectors need Developer mode, which is limited to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.
Is the Eddyter MCP server free to use?
Yes. It works with every Eddyter plan, including the free one. Which features you can switch on depends on your Eddyter plan.
Does ChatGPT see my editor content?
No. The server reads license status, usage and editor settings from Eddyter's API. It never touches the documents your users write.
Do I need to host anything myself?
No. Eddyter hosts the MCP server at https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp. You only paste the URL and sign in.
Can I set this up on the ChatGPT mobile app?
Set it up on chatgpt.com. Once connected, check your mobile app, since custom connector support on mobile is still rolling out.
Start managing Eddyter from ChatGPT
Grab a license key at eddyter.com/user/license-key, add https://mcp.eddyter.com/mcp as a connector, and ask ChatGPT what your editor has switched on. Framework guides live in the Eddyter docs. Questions or bugs go to Eddyter support or the eddyter-mcp GitHub repo.
